Architecture & Symbolism

The unique architecture of the church is reflected in the church floor plan which symbolically represents the cross, with the organ console transept and the choir transept representing the arms of the cross.

Throughout the structure one will note the use of the symbol of the trinity, three-in-one; such as, the three steps in the chancel area, the set of three panels in each window, and there being four sets on each side, forming the number twelve, representing the twelve disciples.

The canvas ceiling and cork flooring have created a church that is a musical instrument with extraordinary acoustics. The wooden buttresses hold up a canvas ceiling with hand painted medallions and emblems portraying religious concepts.

The wood carving of "The Last Supper" at the altar reminds us of the humanness of Jesus. The altar carving from the famous "The Last Supper," by Leonardo da Vinci was carved by Alois Lang of Oberammergau, Germany.

The wood sculptures of angels, pomegranates, and other similar symbols provide another expression of imagery. Throughout the church the pomegranates are used to symbolize the evangelical mission of the church, for as the fruit ripens to maturity, it explodes, to send out its seed in all directions.

The Stained Glass of Jesus "Christ in the Garden of the Lilies", amidst the various hues of purple is the central figure of Thorvaldson's Christ. At the left side of Christ can be seen the Easter lilies, while the Christ stands gesturing, "come unto me all that are heavy laden and I will give you rest". The ascending Christ inspires peace and tranquility to all who come to worship.

The Stained Glass "River of Life Window", above the balcony symbolizes "The River of Life" as described in Revelations 22, The river has no beginning and end in the design and typifies eternal life.

The Stained Glass Windows on both sides of the church remind us of the passion of fire of the Spirit.

The rosettes over the front doors signify that the doors swing open to all nations; the rosettes denote the various nations.

The icon known as "Sophia" brings a feminine image to the sanctuary. At this shrine people may light candles embodying their prayers.

Another form of sculpture, which is generally un-detected, is on the exterior front wall of the church. There you will find concrete and stone symbols of the apostles.

On the church tower and on the spire outside above the chancel we recognize the medieval gargoyle figures which are the ancient symbols used to ward off evil spirits.
